NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Shares of the largest automakers and several of their suppliers fell slightly Wednesday after President Bush signed legislation requiring automakers to boost fuel efficiency by 40 percent by 2020. The legislation increases the federal standard automakers must meet to an industrywide 35 mpg for passengers cars, sport utility vehicles and small trucks. Deutsche Bank’s Rod Lache said the new standards will especially challenge smaller automakers and those geared toward the sale of larger vehicles, such as the three Detroit-based companies. Lache said the automakers will be forced to pass along those costs to consumers, particularly hurting the companies that rely on sales incentives and sales of vehicles with lower sticker prices. read more
