Celebs go to the Web in a call for tougher fuel-economy rules - Detroit Free Press- Topic: Fuel Economy

Hollywood jumped into the fuel-economy debate last week, as a Democratic public policy group unveiled a Web campaign featuring Matt Damon and other celebrities calling for tougher fuel-economy standards and more flex-fuel pumps. Advertisement A bill passed in the Senate last month using the standard, which Detroit automakers call unachievable. The project was launched by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a think tank headed by John Podesta, the former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton. In addition to Damon — shown in one photo wearing a “Gotta Go Gas” gas pump costume — the ads also are to include Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Sarah Silverman. Meanwhile, the auto industry brought the closest thing it has to a celebrity to the Capitol on Thursday — the Chevrolet Volt concept, which was part of a lobbying visit by General Motors Corp. Industry executives have been closely watching their Blackberries over the past few days for updated tallies of the bill’s cosponsors, with the total hitting 85 Friday. read more
