Hurricane Dean had the oil and gas industry’s rapt attention Friday as Gulf of Mexico players eyed its path and started evacuating offshore workers or stood ready to at any moment. Those storms destroyed more than 100 platforms, ripped 19 mobile offshore drilling units from their moorings and shut in 92 percent of oil output and 83 percent of natural gas production. Besides about 5 million cubic feet per day of natural gas still shut in from Erin, the company said Friday it has shut in production of 2,000 barrels a day of oil and 2 million cubic feet of gas from two wells connected to its Brutus platform 165 miles southwest of New Orleans. The Interior Department’s Minerals Management Service, which oversees oil and gas activity in the Gulf, estimated Friday that Dean had prompted shut-ins of about 2,000 barrels of oil and 8 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, based on reports from companies. read more
