The $1 million-plus radio and press advertising campaign in ten states with high percentages of light truck and SUV owners was launched by the AAM, a trade association that represents General Motors, Ford Motor, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, BMW and other manufacturers in the U. Environmental groups sch as the Sierra Club and the Union of Concerned Scientists have criticised the campaign as misinformation. Senate will vote in mid-June on a bill that would require manufacturers to raise their average fuel economy by 40% to of 35 mpg for both passenger cars and light trucks by 2020; the House is working on a separate fuel economy bill; and President Bush has called for 4% average annual fuel economy.
