gas mileage - Why I support an increase in the gas tax.

I would, along with most Republicans, also prefer that the State budget receive some targeted cuts to free-up some funds for transportation so that the gas tax increase (if still needed would not have to be too big of a bight). As it stands now, the typical driver will pay only $15 per year under most gas tax increase proposals. A strong case can be made that the gas tax should be a percentage tax (a la the sales tax) rather than a price per gallon tax, as it is now. Unfortunately, a rational gax tax will be used as an excuse for a tax increase by Dems, and rightfully opposed by Republicans on that ground. read more
