High gas prices scuttle old Sauvie Island Bridge plan

City Commissioner Sam Adams said Wednesday morning that high gasoline prices and a proposed 30-day review of all city transportation projects forced him to drop plans to move the old Sauvie Island Bridge to the Pearl District. City Commissioner Sam Adams told reporters Wednesday morning that he was no longer confident that the bridge could be moved to the Pearl District to be used as a bicycle and pedestrian bridge for the expected $5. Adams said the bridge would be folded into the Burnside-Couch Couplet project that is intended to create a safer corridor for bicyclists and pedestrians from Southeast Portland to Northwest Portland.
