Detwiler professor of cardiology, professor of medicine and chair, department of medicine, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, conducted the five-year Treating to New Targets (TNT) study that involved 10,001 patient. The analysis of the study showed that intensive low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-lowering in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD) whose systolic blood pressure was less than 140 mmHg reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by 42 percent as compared to less intensive LDL lowering and uncontrolled blood pressure of 140 mmHg or higher. Among the 10,001 patients, 9,739 who had both LDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure measured at three months after randomisation, were included in this analysis. Researchers divided patients into groups based on LDL levels (73 mg/dL and lower; 74 to 94 mg/dL; or 95 mg/dL and higher) and systolic blood pressure (140 mmHg and higher, or lower than 140 mmHg) at three months. For each of the three LDL groups, the rate of cardiovascular events was lower in patients whose systolic blood pressure (SBP) was below 140 mmHg. read more

LAGOS (AFP) — Nigerian firefighters Friday managed to douse the flames from a burst oil pipeline a day after a huge explosion triggered a blaze that lasted more than a day. The Nigeria Red Cross said some 100 people were killed when an excavator accidentally pierced the pipeline, creating a lake of petrol that ignited into a huge fireball which engulfed a local school, cars and shoppers. Local government official Olatunde Agoro put the figure at 15. He said 14 people whose homes were burnt spent the night at the local council premises and were still there on Friday. Pipeline fires are commonplace in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, in part because of poor pipeline maintenance but also because of thieves who vandalise pipelines to siphon off petrol to sell on the black market. read more

CALGARY, Alberta, May 16 (Reuters) – A key regulatory report for the C$16. The Joint Review Panel report into the environmental and social impacts into the Mackenzie Valley pipeline will not be published until next year, an official with the panel’s administrative arm said on Friday. The pipeline’s backers have also been locked in lengthy talks with Ottawa over their request for fiscal breaks that would make the line economically viable. The theory goes that fluids are more dense at lower temperatures, so a gallon of cold gas actually has more gas molecules than a gallon of warmer gas. The result is a slight reduction in peak horsepower – really, you’ll never notice – but no reduction in fuel economy. If BP ( BP ) could add something to its gasoline that made cars go farther on a gallon, cars would be lining up at the company’s pumps. Sure, people would burn their fuel-saving BP gas more slowly, but then they’d drive right past rivals’ gas stations to come back to BP for more. You’ve just fueled up your car, you are on your way to work and you are lamenting the outrageous price you just paid at the pump. “What am I going to do to increase my mileage?” you ask.
Darn! The all the traffic is stopped – just what I needed – I’m gonna be late too!
Now take a breath and focus. You DID want to increase your gas mileage, right? Now reach for your ingition key and turn off the motor.
Remember, a car stuck in traffic and idling gets zero miles per gallon. If you think about it, you are getting negative miles per gallon.
Turning off your motor when you will be stopped for more than 30 seconds makes good sense and does not harm your car. Do this when you are commuting, waiting at the drive-in or stuck in traffic this summer on the way to the beach.
NEW YORK – Oil prices shot to a new record near $127 a barrel today on concerns that Iran may consider cutting crude oil production. Prices have now risen to the level at which the Energy Department forecasts they’ll peak in June, on a monthly average basis; that means prices may still go higher, but their average will peak at around $3. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency, an adviser to mostly western, industrialized nations, said high prices are cutting demand for oil and petroleum products in the U. Analysts said heating oil futures were being boosted by reports that supplies of distillates, which include heating oil and diesel, fell last month in Europe. read more

Prices have now risen to the level at which the Energy Department forecasts they´ll peak in June, on a monthly average basis that means prices may still go higher, but their average will peak at around $3. Many analysts have predicted prices will surge much higher, and may breach the psychologically important $4 level on a national basis within the next couple of months. The primary factor driving gas prices higher is the price of crude, which has doubled in the last year. As long as crude prices keep rising, gas prices may buck their normal pattern and follow, Ritterbusch reasoned. Oil prices were following heating oil futures higher Tuesday, analysts said, on reports that stocks of distillate fuels, which include diesel fuel and heating oil, fell last month in Europe amid rising demand, Ritterbusch said. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency, an adviser to mostly western, industrialized nations, said high prices are cutting demand for oil and petroleum products in the U. read more
