The auto industry has made a great show of promising to produce cleaner, more fuel efficient vehicles, yet it vehemently opposes an effort by California and 15 other states to restrict carbon dioxide emissions. That, they say, would force automakers to either stop selling their biggest vehicles - pickup trucks, SUVs and large sedans - in California and other states with the same regulations or be fined for failing to meet the new emission standards. A federal judge agreed in September, ruling in a case pertaining to Vermont’s identical emissions regulations that "It is improbable that an industry that prides itself on its modernity, flexibility and innovativeness will be unable to meet the requirements of the regulation. The auto industry can meet the regulation using existing technology and speeding up the deployment of new technology - direct injection engines, for example - it plans to roll out to meet the new 35 mpg fuel economy standard by 2020. read more
