If fuel economy estimates on 2008 vehicles at local dealerships seem lower than in previous years, it’s not because the vehicles are getting poorer gas mileage. After years of complaints that the tests were based on unrealistic driving conditions, such as average highway speeds of less than 55 miles per hour, the EPA agreed in late 2006 to revise the tests beginning with 2008 vehicles and to take into account a number of real-life driving factors. For example, the 2008 front-wheel-drive Ford Taurus would, under the old method of calculation, have an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway.
