Two on alternative energy -NY Times on biofuel mania ; and Some …

Time’s running short this morning, so I’ll jam two somewhat related energy stories - new sources getting started via gov’t subsidies - in one post. First up , the NYTimes business section has a thoughtful, long package on the US government’s big, recent boosts for biofuels. Too much ambition and wishful thinking, too little proven technology, could be at play - with not only money, but food production in question. Off the state’s northern shore are to be built some turbines powered by bobbing floats hooked to a pulley system - two megawatts worth. San Jose Mercury News Matt Nauman notes that the contract comes while the company involved concedes the hardware is still in early tests, and it needs PG&E’s front money to even try it at full scale ; SF Chronicle David R. read more
