Weekly Oil and Gas Rig Count Up 39 - Forbes. The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States rose by 39 this week to 1,791. Of the rigs running nationwide, 1,501 were exploring for natural gas and 284 for oil, Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas gained 12 rigs, Colorado gained four, California picked up three and Louisiana added one. Oklahoma lost five, New Mexico and Wyoming each lost two and Alaska lost one.
